How do you accomplish the contemporary style whilst still keeping it “homey” in residence?

Introducing soft elements like flowing drapes adds a lot to domesticate clean design.  I also find that adding color through accessories works really well. If you have a neutral colored sofa, for example, an easy addition are playful pillows with bold colors.

What are the hallmarks of good contemporary design?

Timeless lines, functionality, and efficiency are distinct elements of contemporary design.  These are actually the core values of the Bauhaus movement and they are still relevant today.  Good design will enhance your day-to-day life, it’s not just the aesthetics.

Are there particular colors that are better to use in contemporary design?

In our designs, we keep anything that is part of the architecture neutral and add color with accessories.  Bold strong colors offset the neutral pallets.  Tones of reds and yellows add vibrancy, and people look good in those colors, as opposed to cool blues.

How do you keep a contemporary design from feeling too cold, especially in the bathroom?

Bathrooms are clean areas, and I like to keep things minimal, and most importantly, easy to clean.

This means large surfaces without grout (think full slabs of Caesarstone).  Now, to offset it, I like to use real woods and wood veneers for the cabinetry.  This adds a domestic feeling.

I love the contemporary look but I also collect decorative plates and vintage cookie jars. How can I reconcile the two looks?

Actually, I think that is another great way to warm up clean design, whether you have clean shelves or a glass front cabinet.  Make sure you have nice lighting in these areas—that’s key.
