Cool Kids on the Block: How to Revive A Kid's Room
To me, decorating a kid’s room is one of the hardest in the whole house. You want a combination of durable yet cheap, fun yet not too cheesy. These days, it’s so easy to fall into the trap of buying stuff marketed to kids with their favorite cartoon characters. I mean, they make it way too easy! Yet, there are a number of great designers and shops creating thoughtful and well-designed products that won’t have you shielding your eyes or breaking the bank as long as you prioritize. Here are a few ways to add cool to your kid’s room.
Pick a patterned wallpaper
Admittedly, wallpaper can be expensive, but if that’s the only decoration in the room, then you’re good to go. I tend to gravitate towards patterns that are a bit whimsical like the Josef Frank pattern in the first photo above or the blue horses print. They’re sweet and not too cartoony. Wallpaper adds instant finesse to a plain room.
Paint a piece of furniture
Painting a piece of furniture is a cheap way of adding pizzazz to a kid’s room, or any room for that matter. This is a good idea for your hand-me-downs or Ikea pieces that need a little something more. Paint it bright and bold for extra umph.
Limit your color palette
Limiting your color palette to one or two colors equals instant cool, especially if it’s black and white or neutrals. It’s fresh, graphic, and bold and would even be a room that you would want and not just for your kids. This look is definitely for those with strong will-power who can resist the urge to buy pink for their girls and blue for the boys.
