I am the lucky winner of Caesarstone’s Mystery Key contest at the International Builder’s Show in Las Vegas earlier this year. A few weeks ago I collected on my prize and traveled from my home in Florida to Milan, Italy, the global hub of fashion and design. Thank you Caesarstone for the trip of a lifetime!

Milan is not usually included in a typical Italian vacation itinerary, but I found Milan to be a vibrant city with tons of attractions. Not only was it the most fashionable city I visited, you can also find historic sights, artistic masterpieces, cultural events, great food, and a buzzing nightlife. It is definitely a destination not to be missed on your next trip to Italy. These were my favorite sights and activities in Milan:

#1 Climb to the top of the Duomo

Milan’s gothic cathedral was stunning. It’s the largest in Italy, third largest in the world, took six hundred years to build and is full of gorgeous details and towering spires. Don’t forget to climb the winding staircase to the roof and walk around the roof of the church. You can admire the architecture up close while getting a great view of the city.

#2 Shop until you drop at the Quadrilatero della Moda

Quadrilatero dela Moda AKA the Fashion Square is Milan’s high-end shopping district. It’s comprised of four main streets where you can shop until you drop, gawk at luxury shops’ fancy window displays, and take in the parade of well dressed people in this trendy area.

#3 Stroll through the Brera District

Enjoy a stroll through the artsy and bohemian Brera District. On these old cobblestone streets you will find antiques shops, art galleries, and vintage clothing boutiques. You can also visit the Pinacoteca di Brera gallery, Milan’s famous art museum that houses a collection of Renaissance art. At night, the streets take on a lively atmosphere and Brera is a great spot to enjoy an Italian aperitivo.

#4 Discover the new Porta Nuova area

Grab a bite to eat at the Eataly store, which is like a grocery department store, or check out the trendy restaurants at Porta Garibaldi. After taking in all of the historic churches and buildings around Italy, I enjoyed checking out the modern architecture of the nearby Unicredit Tower, a brand new skyscraper with a square below that has fountains, shops, and good people watching. At night this area is another great spot for an aperitivo.

#5 Enjoy Milan’s Canals in the Navigli

Venice is not the only city in Italy where you can find canals. The charming Navigli district of Milan has three canals and a great nightlife. I thought it had a more casual vibe than Porta Nuova and Brera and on a Saturday night was packed with people enjoying the local restaurants and bars. I also loved stumbling upon the Mercato Metropolitano, an open air market built for Milan Expo. The Mercato is a farmers market by day and at night was a fun place to enjoy food, hang out with friends and catch an outdoor movie or concert.
