  1. Moved in to a new home. Has large open living plan. kitchen area living room garden room, and dining room. bought really nice living room furniture in a nickel grey, leather an a grey and white sofa. A designer at the store suggest a rug that has beige, greens, and grey. She suggested pillows with patterns in the rug. She also suggested that we use yellow accent in throws. I’m not feeling this look. The rug seems to small. Wood floors, dark brown and brassy looking lamp shades. What can I do to perk it up. I am not feeling my personality in this look.

  4. Hi Ty,

We have a problem with the sub-floor in the bathroom. The sub-floor needs to be repaired. We have received a few estimates and have decided on a small contractor. The concern is the contractor’s estimate. One estimate does not include the cost of pulling permits. The second estimate includes the cost of puling permits, which we do not have a problem with. We have a limited budget and we feel that the contractor is taking advantage of us by charging what we feel like is a large amount of money to pull two permits, one for plumbing and the other for the sub-floor. We have to replace the toilet which caused the problem with the sub-floor.

My question, is how can we discuss our concerns with this contractor and not feel like when they begin the work that they will take short cuts. What would you suggest?

    Thank you.

  5. Need plans drawn up for a house remodel and new garage. Do I need an Architect or can someone else draw them up? If so, how would I find someone to help me.

  6. Hello Ty! I was thinking of changing the floor of my terrace, now it is only of cement and waterproofing. A couple of years ago there was a filtration with dampness that was arranged, thinking to future and in avoiding a new problem of dampness: what type of floor do you recommend?? I was between ceramic and deck of wood, which would be the best? Probably the deck is easier to remove if there is a new problem with loss? Thank you very much! Hugs from Argentina.

  8. I am planning to build my first 2 bed-roomed home on a flat plot of land here in Kampala but with hydraform interlocking blocks, However, the building challenge with ISSB Technology has a reduced flexibility for layout designs from the more conventional fired bricklaying. i’d love to have your thoughts and ideas on this one. Thank you

  10. What’s the best way to decorate a big wall in living room that’s sloped at the top due to a vaulted celling with a couch against it in a small room with little natural light?

  11. This isn’t really a design question, It is just my thoughts on how design mirrors life and relationships. sometimes in life you get a second chance, redsigning a room is like giving that room a second chance. If you believe that a room deserves a 2nd chance shouldnt people get more chances too. In some cases a room gets a 3rd or 4th chance. Ha!

Sometimes an object(person) you want or need in a room comes with bad reviews from others who didnt like it. Just as in relationships in life, an ex may give you a bad review. Or a bad review could come from others who interacted with it. Sometimes similar but different objects clash. Which I think doesnt mean its a bad product(person), it just means it wasnt a good fit for their design of life.

In that respect, sometimes a person just needs to spend a little time with the questionable object(person) and give that object a chance to prove the negative reviews wrong. πŸ™‚ I mean, an accessory may be totally bad in one room, but be a perfect fit for another. Certain things in one room may bring out the worst traits in the object(person) but removing the object from the cicumstances that clash and placing it in a new enviroment suddenly could make the object shine.

For example, When I volunteered at the Bakesale in May, I think I shined differently. That is what I am really like. It was a different enviroment/room with no negative distractions or interactions, I could be myself there. I could interact with other objects like You, Ty and not be feel Bogged down by negative reviews and competition, and that helped me blend in better, and shine, & be me. That direct contact is like changing the circumstances, or re-arranging a room. Sort of like buying an accessory thru the internet(meeting someone online) You can’t really see how good its going to fit in your room or your life until you see it in person and close-up and under the right light? πŸ™‚ Sometimes you must take the plunge to really understand and know it will fit into your design of life.

And so I definitely feel that design can be a metaphor for life. So my question is: Will you now start applying design concepts to relationships, now that I have pointed this out?

If one believes in re-purposing why cant the object(people) be re-purposed in new relationship/ rooms as well ha!

  21. Ty. We bought a home that was a single wide trailer and they
Add on to it. Framed the wall around the trailer the truss go
Over addation and trailer. Looks like a double wide trailer. The whole
Out side is stuccoed. The addition is on foundation. My question is
Would it be better to just pull out the trailer part or
Tear out iN pics starting with back so we can have a
Master bath and we GO frontwards and put foundation
As we go or at end. What is less cost efftive?

  22. Gidday Ty, We live in Melbourne Australia, and we live in a 1960s colonial style double storey house. In the loungeroom we have a ceiling to floor clinker brick surround and over mantle with gas heater inbuilt.. It has a lovely floating timber mantle. Do we keep it as a feature or ditch it? We would love to hear your thoughts!

  23. What kind of tub or shower and inexpensive should my family get for my husbands grandmother. It is to tight and she uses a walker. She needs more space and a tub or shower to get in easy for her because she does not have cartilage between her knees and can not have surgery because they are scared something might happen to her because of her pacemaker she had to get.

Lots of things need to be updated even a larger room for her.

  24. I have lots of shelves, table tops and mantels in my house (and probably plenty of stuff to put on them) but I never know where to start, and what things to place where. Any tips on making your shelves look effortless and not cluttered with nick-nacks?
