How to Incorporate Open Shelves in Your Kitchen

A trend that we see popping up everywhere is open shelving in the kitchen. It’s not a brand new concept, but one that is being embraced more and more. Some homeowners are all about it, but some don’t see the need. It does seem to limit storage space. So why do we love this trend?

The first answer to that question is the visual appeal that it creates. It gives an open, modern feel to the space. It can also be a great solution to a dreary or cramped kitchen. The key is filling the shelves with pieces that inspire you and your cooking abilities.

If you are not willing to get rid of all of your upper cabinets, just add a few open shelves in a strategic place. One suggested area is on the side of either the sink or oven. If you choose the sink, display your dishware and try to stay with one color. It becomes both practical and pretty.

Kitchen islands not only provide extra counter space but added storage as well. If you have the blessing of an island or even a pantry, then have some fun and go for all open shelves. If you want to display some practical items, use glass or ceramic storage jars to hold food items.

However you choose to work in open shelving, have fun and think outside the box. If you are working with neutral color choices in ceramics and tools then you can add and take away whatever is needed. Above, we see that the lower cabinets are white, sleek and modern. They leave room for a more rustic look with the upper cabinets and accessories. It’s a great mix!

  1. I want open shelves in my kitchen but my husband(who is currently the dishwasher) doesn’t, because he says all the stuff on the shelves will get grease on them from the cooking. So he doesn’t want to be washing the stuff on the shelves every day. and I don’t blame him. Whats the solution?
