KBTribeChat | Trending Kitchen Materials and Styles
In this week’s KBTribeChat, designers, consumers and appliance companies from all around came together to discuss which materials and styles are trending in the kitchen. While everyone was happy to give their two cents on the latest trends, the conversation gravitated towards which trends would—or already did—turn into timeless classics (we’re looking at you, neutrals color palettes).
In between tweets about motion-sensor sinks and the dreamy idea of fingerprint-proof appliances, one central theme arose: convenience and functionality are more important than trendiness. While it is fun to stay up to date with fashion and design, if you remodeled your kitchen each time a new trend popped up, you’d never have dry paint on your walls! It’s important to find a balance between functionality, design and timeless trends.
What finishes or materials are trending in kitchen design?
Quartz is still king! It’s more durable than granite and marble—not to mention it’s easy to maintain and adds a touch of sophistication to any room. We love the way Boutique Homes Victoria used our new Topus Concrete to cover this elegant kitchen island.

What is the biggest design request you hear from people who are remodeling their kitchen?
Two words: More. Storage. Take advantage of your kitchen island by adding tons of shelving to the base. Centoni Restoration and Development show us how it’s done with this Alpine Mist island design.

How has the rise of open floor plans affected kitchen design?
Open floor plans create a more sociable living environment. In a culture filled with new technologies, it’s more important than ever that we make time to have face-to-face conversations with family and friends. Light and airy kitchen designs promote interactivity and connectivity in the home.

What do you believe drives appliance choices? Design or technology?
Ultimately, functionality reigns supreme. While it can be fun to have whimsical designs and futuristic gadgets, what matters most is that you have appliances that work for YOU.

Do you believe in mixing and matching finishes, why or why not?
Absolutely! When mixing finishes, just be sure to choose a dominant and an accent finish. This will help you create balance in your space and prevent your design from overwhelming the eye.
