Trend Tracker: Beni Ourain Rugs

Beni Ourain rugs are Moroccan berber rugs, typically made of un-dyed ivory wool with a large-scale black diamond pattern. They’re made by hand, and as such the patterns are often pleasingly askew, with the design detail meandering and changing scale from one end to the other. They entered our collective design conscience when Domino Magazine featured the home of Jenna Lyons, creative director of J.Crew, in 2008.

In the past, they’ve paired exceptionally well with modern to mid-century modern furniture, playing off of the sleek straight lines and adding some plushness. In their current resurgence, they’re fitting in nicely with homes of every style, from glam to rustic to farmhouse chic.

Large rugs are typically more affordable than other comparable handmade wool rugs, which has helped contribute to their popularity, but they also come in a variety of sizes. Below, a smaller one has been used as an entryway runner. (Though the thought of what one slushy, snowy Chicago winter here would do to that rug makes me wince!)

If you’d like to add a Beni Ourain rug to your home, authentic Moroccan berbers can be found at eSaleRugs and Pink Rug Co. Major retailers West Elm and Pottery Barn are also carrying their own versions, which is a good option if you’re not one to take a chance on a vintage or one-of-a-kind rug you’ve only seen on the internet!

Wool is a durable material, and these rugs are classics that will outlive any current trendiness they’re experiencing.

Would you live with a Beni Ourain in your home?

  1. We stumbled over here from a different page and thought I might check things out.
I like what I see so i am just following you. Look forward to finding out about your web page yet

Look at my web-site – five skin

  2. I just ordered one at during their 70% off sale-5×7 for $150.00. I went back and forth on whether or not to buy it since I see them everywhere, but I really like the style and think I’ll like it even after it loses it’s trendiness.

  3. Definitely want one of these. We have a slight mid century bent to our furniture and I have a flat, hide rug, while very nice, just doesn’t work. I agree that plushness is needed with streamlined furniture.

  4. YES! I have been craving one for a little over a year now and I’m a little nervous that it’s overdone but I really love the look. Plus RugsUSA is having a major sale right now….
