Designer Spotlight | Smitharc Architects

by ·

This month’s designer spotlight features the architecturally savvy team at Smitharc Architects. The company is based out of Dallas, Texas and was established in 2006 by husband and wife team, Jason and Signe Smith. The team prides itself on maximizing the potential for artful buildings with careful craftsmanship and seamless execution. Their designs consistently reflect a  deep understanding of their clients' unique and individual needs.

Let us introduce the Blue Dog Residence, a modern home nestled in the slope of a picturesque pond-side acreage in Durham, North Carolina. The clean, industrial kitchen design boasts an all-grey color palette.

The countertops and kitchen island are adorned with slabs of Raw Concrete. The lightly textured surface of the quartz adds a sensorial dimension to this minimalistic kitchen. Additionally, the soft, earthy nature of surface complement the panoramic views of the water and surrounding woods, which are visible through the floor-to-ceiling glass doors.

Designer tip: use natural elements, such as plants, to bring a design to life. Smitharc sets a piece of driftwood atop the Blizzard countertops in this natural-looking kitchen. The subtle and elegant appearance of the white quartz blends well with the wood finish of the cabinets, floor and dining table.

We are seeing a progressive shift towards transforming run-of-the-mill bathrooms into ethereal wellness rooms. Smitharc uses a consistent color palette, identical mirror and lighting setups and Blizzard countertops throughout to create continuity in this spa-like oasis.

During the day, the mirrors reflect the sunshine from the expansive window while strip lights above the cabinetry ensure optimal lighting throughout the room. Frosted glass doors separate the shower and bathroom from the powder room.

As you may have noticed, the Smitharc team is no stranger to maximizing natural light and using minimalism in their designs. A floating vanity topped with Blizzard in this simple and sophisticated bathroom hovers above the large-tiled floor. The team used smaller tiles in the shower floor but kept the charcoal-grey color consistent with the rest of the floor tiling in order to create continuity.

Doing laundry has never been more relaxing! Blizzard countertops, glossy-finished floor tiles and an all-white color scheme produce a tranquil environment. Meanwhile, floor-to-ceiling cabinetry ensures plenty of room for storage.

We’re going to take a page out of Smitharc’s design book and install a refrigerator next to our washing machine, too! Who wouldn’t want to have easy snack access while they’re sorting through their darks and whites?

Whether you want to sit in a lounge chair and take in the view of the gardens or binge-watch Netflix on the flat screen, you’ll be sure to stay warm next to the fireplace in this outdoor seating area. A floating Pebble hearth is connected to a wood-planked wall which seamlessly transitions between the indoors and outdoors.

Modern architecture and design enthusiasts, rejoice! Smitharc has cracked the code on creating minimalist environments that double as tranquil wellness spaces. We’ll be sure to keep an eye out for more of their innovative takes on incorporating nature and architectural flare into designs.
