House Beautiful’s Kitchen of the Year Transformation

The kitchen has truly become the heart of the home. Whereas 50 or 60 years ago the kitchen was separated from the rest of the house, it has now become a focal point of the American home. Floor plans have become more open in an attempt to gather the family in one room. With the goal to create a well-designed and comfortable kitchen, designer Steven Miller also noted the intricacies involved in the process. He explains, “I love designing kitchens. They are the synthesis of my favorite things – food and aesthetics – as well as the science of ergonomics and productivity. Like opera or a fine meal, all elements must be finely tuned. Add people, and you have the heart of the home.”

For the first time in seven years, Kitchen of the Year will be held on the West Coast. The space will be displayed at the San Francisco Decorator Showcase from April 26 to May 26, featuring the work of some of the nation’s best interior and landscape designers. The event is being held at a lovely home in Presidio Heights, where Miller has transformed a basic kitchen into a dramatic and fully functional space featuring Caesarstone countertops. He chose a beautiful quartz countertop in Organic White, which contrasts beautifully against the pitch-black cabinetry and tile work.

Before, the kitchen was fully functional and basic, though a bit outdated. With the careful selection of sensual materials, the kitchen has a new layout and more glamorous feel, setting a stately mood for the rest of the house. Now this landmark home is fitting for one of San Francisco’s most beautiful neighborhoods. What a difference new materials, like stylish quartz countertops and refaced cabinets, can make in a home!
